In the world of gemstones, diamonds reign supreme. Although they are all beautiful, not all diamonds are the same. White diamonds are among the rarest and most exquisite, with only about 1% of all mined diamonds having this unique hue.
At Mazzucchelli's, our collection of white diamonds showcases the enduring charm of these rare and stunning gems. From understated necklaces to eye-catching earrings, we have the perfect piece for you.
We'll explain what makes white diamonds special, why they're not considered colourless, and the fascinating reasons behind their rarity and value.
What are white diamonds?
White diamonds, despite their name, aren't colourless. They are called ‘white’ because they resemble colourless stones, but in reality, white diamonds have a milky, opaque look. Most diamond colour grading scales don’t have a category for white, making it a unique term in the diamond world.
What makes white diamonds white?
The milky appearance of white diamonds comes from tiny inclusions that occur during their formation. While other diamonds get their colour from carbon and nitrogen, white diamonds have small inclusions that let light pass through. These inclusions are so small that regular microscopes can't see them - scientists have to use special electron microscopes.
The result is a snowy, translucent look. Some white diamonds even show flashes of colour, like a white opal.
Why are white diamonds expensive?
According to the Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia (DCLA), white diamonds range from D to I on their colour grading scale. While the difference between each colour can be very subtle, a D-colour diamond is around 200% more valuable than an I-colour diamond. So why is this the case?
Because of the way they’re created
The big difference between white and coloured diamonds comes from how they're made. Coloured diamonds get their distinctive hues from extra impurities, giving them their characteristic hue. White diamonds are clearer and purer, standing out in a unique subset of coloured diamonds.
Because of how rare they are
White diamonds are very rare, making them even more valuable. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), fewer than 2,000 natural white diamonds have been submitted for grading since 2008. This rarity makes white diamonds the perfect choice for anyone looking for an unusual and valuable gem.
